3020 D whats it worth?

Just got a call from my SIL, she is looking to sell my brother's 3020D. It is a wide front end utility synchromesh. Dash hydraulics, 2 remotes. Front end loader.
It is a 24 volt model with some charging issues. The hydraulics are a problem, dash controls have to be just right to work. He has had it 20 years and not worked
hard while he had it. I am not a JD person, got a range of values from Tractor House and they seemed to be a lot more than what I would value it at. Agriculture is
pretty poor in WNY at the moment. Brother has ALS and tough decisions to make.

If it is truly a hardship case and the family is well thought of in the community, fund raisers would raffle something like that. Fix a few of the small easy to fix problems with it and then sell 500 to 1,000 raffle tickets at $20 or $50 each. Just an out of the box thought.

There is mebbe 1000 folks in the whole township. My family has been there since dirt was made, but it is
truly an area that time has forgot. No industry, no trade, no business, no ag. I look at pictures from
100 years ago and it was in better shape then. The Amish are subsistence farming and making a go of it.

I would fix a few things and put it on a consignment auction or something like that if there?s no money to be had locally

Where in WNY? Might be some orchard or vineyard person interested in such a tractor near the Lake Erie or Lake Ontario shoreline.

David is pretty close. My uncle just sold a rowcrop with a 148 loader for 8000, I think. It was a way above average tractor. It was a 1967 model. He had it since 1970.

If it is actually a utility, are the battery boxes, lids and fenders in good shape? Are the side shields and top link there? What shape is the rest of the sheet metal and hood? tire size and condition? These all affect the price of the tractor. The charging system issue could be a $200 fix or it could be several times that if the harness, generator,or regulator is bad. Same thing with the hydraulic issue.
Maybe post some pics if you are able to, as they will help value the tractor. With out seeing it,$ 4500- $5000 would be a ball park figure to start with considering the issues. It shouldn't be a hard sale as there are several members interested in it now, but you need to come up with a dollar figure.

It is quite a ways from me; drifted in the shed. I last saw it running 2 years ago, used it to split wood. No dry rot on the tires and as I recall good tread. I don't know about the top link, fenders and side shields are good. Battery lids are not on it. I have no idea of machines value, I got a call outta the blue from my SIL and she was grasping. When I can get down there I will start it and get it out for pictures and list it. There are no tools down there or much of a place to work on it. I read the service manual on the hydraulics and it is beyond my skill level. When the snow clears I have the electric service to put back up to the barn so the shed gets power. SIL is 80, if I list it, it will be up to me to show it. So I drag it back here to show and sell or sell it there at a discount?

She can hardly walk, doesn't know how to start it or even put the charger on the batteries. Sigh. Looks like I am inheriting a circus and I will be the monkey.

Ernie- Sorry to hear of your brother's diagnosis and the situation you find yourself in, those are tough rows to hoe.

Good luck with the 3020, I would take it back to your place to fix/sell if you have better fixtures, assuming your SIL is okay with that.

Helping out under those conditions can be trying, but it is the good and right thing to do.

If you're basing how hyd's operate from utilizing a wood splitter on 3020 it's possible wood spltter has an open center hyd valve which if plugged into 3020 will play havoc with 3020's closed center hyd system

The problem (as I understand it) is with the FELoader. The controls on the dash have to be tickled just right to make it work. Brother had the finesse to use it but very touchy. You are probably correct with the splitter taking the internals down. He had someone local look at it and said it had an internal leak. He was quoted more than he wanted to spend to repair. So as I think about it, the controls went south about when he got the splitter. The JD manual referenced a special tool and shims to adjust the dash controls. This was 25 years ago. He had a hobby dairy (10 cows) and cut firewood, baled a little hay.

At least the cows are gone. I have a shop and tools, but not JD talent to dig into it. It is too heavy to move by my truck and trailer, too far to drive back.
It is miserable to work on with the FEL on, I am not as nimble as I was 40 years ago.

My MIL and her sister are in assisted living, one local and the other in Buffalo. Buffalo house to empty and get ready to be sold. Widow friend of ours I have
helping disperse her tools, car collection, and motorcycle. Jaguar engines and transmissions stacked like cord wood. Baskets full of vise grips, screw drivers, etc.
Note to self, engines not in a car are there for a reason.

Another widow I put together and fogged 2 of her corvettes for long term storage. That was 1700 miles away. Others had been there help before me, and were more helping
themselves. Her hubby and my friend lost power on his plane on take off, crashed and perished.

Going to FL to help my 91 yr old past farmer neighbor, I visit once a year and help with repairs for a day or two around his house. He is lonely and is missing a leg.
He and I would go to tractor pulls and help one another out 50 years ago.

I told my wife when I kick to clean the checking account out, have a party. Put a sign by the road, free beer, tools and tractors. Or at least what I call a tractor (Ford).
