Water in oil

I have a 1940 JD L that I just put a new head gasket on and had the head checked out by an automotive machine
shop. Put it back together and still getting water in the oil. Has anyone had any luck with block sealer in an engine of
this type without a water pump? Or would it hurt anything if I ran it like it is with water no anti freeze. Thanks for any
ideas, Mark

I had a 1936 A that did that and it was the pushrod tubes were corroded through. Not hard to change and available from John Deere. If I remember correctly they had a taper on them and could only be installed one way. Not a fan of stop leaks, just better to fix.

Whether it is straight water, antifreeze or some combination of the 2, you will ruin your engine running it with anything other than oil in the crankcase. Oil sit on top of water, so upon startup, after sitting for a bit, your oil pump will suck up straight water and supply that to your bearings.

Wonder if the block is cracked ? it might could be repaired ? could always run a light weight oil in the cooling system ?

I have run sealer in my john deeres and it is just fine to do so. Go to a auto parts store or any where and what iv used is called bars block sealer. They make all kinds of sealer now days. Just remember that if u drain the water out u will need to put new sealer in or use the water u took out. How much water u have going in the oil. If I remember right them only take like 3 gallons of coolent so I would run it up so its warm then shut off and drain off a gallon add the sealer and fill back up and run some more. If I'm thinking right there is a frost plug behind the front cover that can be leaking because it rusted out some.

A little water in the oil will not hurt the motor but any antifreeze will. I M SURE HES CHECKS The oil all the time to see if and how much its getting in there. Lots of people check there oil wrong every day by using a grease rag and not there fingers. Why the fingers it is to see on how good the oil is for lubricant protection then you wipe your fingers off with the rag. That been said if theres some water in there it will be mix with the oil and still be fine as long as he make sure of its protection.

If you can I would pull the motor and put it on an engine stand then put a plug in the water hose on the bottom an on the top a radiator adaptor that comes with a radiator pressure tester, pull the oil pan an then put water in the motor with some air space an pump it up to about 3 pounds. Let it sit for a while and look up under it and it will show you where the water is coming from. Lets us know what you find out we will help you on this.

I am going to try some block sealer called blue devil from napa tomorrow. Anyone have any experience with this sealer before? I just wish the L had a water pump. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks everyone, Mark

My boy has used it and it worked good for him after he hit a deer and mess up the radiator on his truck. We needed to get it home and the parts store was only a mile away. It worked good and were able to drive the truck home with at first some small leaking but when we made it home the leaks were gone. I told him that maybe all the water as gone to let it sit tell the morning and then we can look at it. The next day the coolent was right up there.
