power steering leak on 70 JD diesel

Have had the tractor in a warm garage, replacing the head gasket. Started it up and power steering started leaking bad. Any ideas? How big a job is it to replace seals, if that is the problem? Yes, I have a manual!!

Well it all depends on your tolerance for aggravation . There is more than one approach to getting at the PS pump. Some say you can basically just wiggle it out of there, well go luck with that. I decided to get at it by raising the governor and moving the fan shaft back. That works but there are some pit falls. The other more popular way is to move the radiator (which I did not want to touch) as I was working on a 70D standard with a good radiator .

Check the hoses and fittings first. The other common leaker is the seal in the housing that the steering shaft slides into. Pull the nose cone and and the leak should be apparent.

Be aware of how the seals in the pump function and what they are holding pressure against as you may not actually see a fluid leak in some instances. Mine had a leak you could not see as PS oil was ending up in the crank case. Some will blow oil out the vent cap in the pedestal and some will suck air and produce foaming. Then there are the leaks you cause in the process , make sure you seal those fittings on top of the pump as they are hard to reach later BTDT.
