John Deere g knocking and pinging under load.

Hello all I have a John Deere g I just got done rebuilding the engine with 90 over pistons. Tractor has loads of power finally took it out and pulled and plowed with it today while it was pulling when it was dragging down it started knocking under load then when I plowed with it it seemed to be knocking or pinging under load. Wondering if this is normal for a g.

I will give that a shot. I believe it?s all the way back I will push it forward a little bit and see what happens. One more day of pulling so I hope I can get it figured out tommorow.

Open the load needle up and give it more fuel. Make it smoke black at idle and then back it off till it quits. Same with the idle needle. A little black smoke won't hurt as much as the pinging. Did you smooth all the sharp edges in the motor when you put it together. It will ping off of those also and no it is not supposed to do that. It will destroy itself if you keep on using it that way. Back the timing off also. Most distributors are shot and that could be causing it also. We rebuild them and set the timing curve for the hp of your motor. We have seen them from -5 degrees at idle to over 50 degrees at half throttle. It would be well worth the money to send it our way and have it fixed. Email is open if you have more questions.

I will give that a shot tomorrow. It has a mag on it vs a distributor I haven?t rebuilt it yet but it has great spark. There shouldn?t be any sharp edges in the engine but then again I didn?t really check for them.

If it is running lean enough to make it "ping" ...it most likely would actually "pop" through exhaust or spit and sputter . Richening up load may stop it somewhat but you are just putting a bandaid on the real issue which is timing. I see you have plenty of help coming on that. Get timing right and then set carb...not the other way around.

Well it doesn?t sound abnormal other than the normal chug chug pop chug pop pop. I have been watching a couple of you tube videos i dunno if I should check the mag Impulse timing or should I just retard the mag on the tractor to see if that helps.

You are better off with a distributor, as the advance can be tuned, a mag is impulse or advance, no in between.

That explains the problem .after the impulse kicks in after startup . A mag does not vary the timing advance with rpm. Full timing advance with the engine lugged down will cause pinging .
This would be the time to look for a Delco Distributer

What year ?G? is it?
If it is old enough to have a magneto, it could have the 35 degree advance
drive cup. Possibly a 30.
In any event, retarding the mag for running timing also retards starting
timing. They are supposed to have starting timing set for LH top dead center
or slightly after. So if you start at zero, you get 35 degrees as soon as it is running.
35 degrees advance on a slow speed engine on gasoline is quite a bit. There
is a 25 degree drive available, but it is normally a short lug drive. They can
be modified to long lug if required.

When we did our g with aluminum pistons we had to run better fuel it it other wise it would do the pinging when we worked it. It had a all fuel manifold on it and my dad would run fuel oil in it and the tep was at 200. When we would be plowing we had to plow in 2 and if you went in 3 it would ping bad.If we switch it over on good gas it would pull the 3 bottom plow in 4th.Im thinking you should get some premium gas fuel and try it before any thing else.
