JD 630 Starter

The starter on my 630 would not engage in the recent cold spell we had (live in Minnesota). I removed the battery and tested it was fine so I left it alone due to the cold weather until yesterday when it warmed to the mid 30's. I placed some heat on the tractor to warm it faster, removed the starter cover plate cleaned connection on the starter and battery cables. The starter/selinod clickes when you hit the switch but does not engauge the flywheel. If I hit the starter while the battery charge is hooked to the battery the needle on the charger jumps to showing a completely dead battery and then slowly begins to show charging. No previous problems with starter.

Did you "load test" the battery?

Have you verified the starter drive gear and ring gear haven't jammed?

I did load test the battery. I how do you determine if the ring gear and starter drive have jammed, I assume pulling the fly wheel cover.

Yes with the cover off you should be able to look right down at where the starter engages. You could have failure of the solenoid. I had two of them fail recently. On one the heavy contacts inside reached the end of there useful life. So the gear would engage with the flywheel, but it would not spin. On the other the solenoid coils shorted out somewhere internally. It also would engage the gears and would barely crank the engine. But it produced bad smelling smoke! Both were sudden failures with no warning. Both now doing fine with new solenoids.
