John Deere 60 pto pump oil seal and bushing replacement

This is an update on the rockshaft housing removal and inspection that I started on my JD 60 about a week ago. Per advice from other members of this forum I decided to replace the oil seals on the pump housing that the pto runs through. Once I got the old seals out I saw that the bushing was scored pretty bad so I ordered a replacement through deere. Today I got the parts and installed the bushing carefully and slowly. However, I wanted some clarification before driving both seals in. I drove the first one back till it seated against the bushing. Does the second seal, (which I understand should have the lip out in opposite direction of the back one) seat back to back with the other seal or should there be a space between the two? I notice theres a small hole/passage in the pump housing that the back seal partially covers. Did I drive it too far back? Thanks,

Pete

I think you went to far with the first seal. When I install those seals I put in the first
one slightly past the lip of the bore then I install the second seal and push it in till
it's flush with the bore. The second seal pushes the first seal in to the proper depth.

T, I had a feeling that might be the case once I saw that hole exposed. I got three of those seals from Deere yesterday in case I ran into any problems so I will drive the first one out and correct it. Is it better to use high tack or permatex when reassembling the pump body?

I like to put something like Loctite or hardening permetex on the outside of the seals to help lock them in place and seal them to the housing. A socket that still slips into the housing makes a nice tool when used with a press to push the new seals in place. Like other said start the one and then the other and only go to where the outer most seal is in far enough for full support just past the champher edge. This should leave that inner oil passage unblocked. Pack some grease in the spot between the 2 seal lips. Use some sort of shaft protector to protect the seal lips from damage from the splines on the shaft as you slide it on. Some thin coating of gasket shellac or high tack should work fine for where the pump mounts.
