JOHN DEERE B OVERHAUL

I am in the process of doing an overhaul on my 1945 "B". I am replacing the manifold because the old one developed a hole in it. Decided to install a gas manifold and replace the all fuel pistons with gas pistons. I got the head off today and found the pistons are .045 oversize. I cannot locate .045 oversize pistons. I have found .045 oversize rings and late styled pistons and rings .045 over but not early styled ones. Don't know where else to look.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Were the 45 over gas pistons even offered in the aftermarket? Can you find any dimensions on what the compression distance would be for 45 over gas pistons? Would it be the same as for late B gas pistons? What is the compression height of your pistons?

You will need to clean up the bore and measure it with a mic to see how much wear you have and where it is worn at. It may be fine and just need new rings. There is a chance it could have gas pistons in it since it was oversized. JD made cast iron gas only pistons. Not sure if anyone makes aftermarket 4 1/2" bore ones for those or not now ? I have heard tales of people boring them and putting late B 4 11/16" pistons in them. That's a lot of metal out and could hit a sand or rust hole into water jacket. I found a NOS set of 4 1/2" bore .045 gas pistons for mine when I restored it. Gas pistons really wake them up ! I also went the gas manifold route but it did not want to align up at the air cleaner hose very well. I had to fill in one bolt hole ( top I think ? ) and redrill and tap it to move the top of the intake pipe over to align up the hose better. If your block is worn too bad now and you have .045" pistons you might be able to find another block that is std. bore and have it bored to use your pistons ?
