Polarizing mt generator.

[b:654c4848f0]When and How to Polarize a Generator[/b:654c4848f0]

Polarization is a procedure which matches the polarity for the generator and the voltage regulator by permitting a surge of current to flow through the generator, correctly polarizing it.

Damage to electrical components can occur if polarities do not match.

Polarization of the generator should take place whenever any of the following events occur:
1. The battery is replaced or disconnected from the tractor
2. The generator is replaced or serviced
3. The regulator is replaced or serviced

If any of these events occurred, do not start the engine until polarization is done. The polarity of the generator must be set to match that of the voltage regulator.

Make a jumper wire (14 or 16 gauge) and put alligator clips on both ends.

Polarize the generator by using the jumper wire and momentarily jumping from the [b:654c4848f0]ARM[/b:654c4848f0] terminal on the generator over to the starter switch on the starting motor to get a small spark.

Take a look at the photo below of the jumper wire connected to the [b:654c4848f0]ARM[/b:654c4848f0] terminal on the generator on "Sparky" our 1951 Model M.

Hope this helps.

If needed you can Polarize the generator by using a jumper wire to momentarily flash/jump the BAT over to the GEN/ARM terminal on a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay. Another method is to jump any hot battery voltage source such as where the big battery cable attaches to a starter switch or solenoid or even the hot ungrounded battery post to the ARM post on the Generator itself. This can be an easier method if you cant get to the Cutout Relay or Voltage regulator as the ARM post on the Generator is easy to get to as well is the battery or the big battery cable on the starter switch or solenoid. In either case you would get a spark when the momentary jump is attached as the field coils draw current. The fields draw current and impart a degree of magnetism into the soft iron field poles in the correct North or South polarity.

The ARM post on generator is a convenient access point, but be careful to touch only the nut or ring connector. Do not spark the bolt and risk damaging the threads
