12 volt batteries

I'm converting a 4020 to 12 volt from 24 volt my question is it better to run a cable from each positive post to the starter solenoid or run a cable from the positive post on the right battery to the positive post on the left battery then on to the starter solenoid. Then with the ground cables should I run a cable from each negative post to a starter mounting bolt or run a cable from the right battery to the left battery then up tp a starter mounting bolt. Thanks

If it were mine, considering the cables available, I would do the easiest way and try it.

One advantage to connecting batteries in parallel and only one positive and one negative cable to tractor is that you would only need to disconnect one negative cable to kill power for service

My son did my 4020 conversion many years ago and since I still use the original battery set up (2 12V batteries), I think they have the cables like you describe (separate cables to each battery), but not positive. Just replaced the batteries a couple weeks ago and they were 6 years old so no complaint about battery life.

I did one with two cables, it makes a lot of wire on the starter, I would go with a single larger cable that loops over both batteries.

I converted my 3020 fairly recently and just ran both battery + to the starter. I can still get the side cover on fine.

I wanted to install a boat battery switch so that I could just run one + cable to the starter post but by the time I laid it all out it wasn't pretty or functional really. I still like the idea of one, the ability to isolate a battery for charging and one dead battery doesn't strand you, but it would look out of place on the tractor and it ends up routing the battery cable places I didn't want them to go where they would be rubbing metal etc.
