1945 John Deere A

I went and looked at a 1945 A this evening. Serial number says 1945. It is not running at the present time but ran two summers go the guy said. It is stored in a big warehouse. It cranked over just fine with the flywheel and even spit out the petcocks. I'm sure the gas is old but it acted like it wants to run. Didn't pursue it any further thinking I can get it cheaper with it not running. One problem I saw was the drum on right side moves in and out when the clutch handle is engaged and disengaged. I don't know if this is normal or not. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The tin work is really straight

The guy seemed to be firm at $1000

What would be your best price?

Tires are old but still pretty good

Well, if you want one, that looks like a good one to have. Got rockshaft, metal very nice, rear rims not rotted(? other side ok) matched rears, get it!! How much will it cost to find another for what $less vs time and issues with the next one. Probably a good tune up on the mag will get it to run. Make sure coolant is still where it belongs, not in oil.

That sounds like a good price. The clutch is moving in and out because it needs to have the crankshaft end play adjusted.

May just need the points cleaned to get good spark ? Very common when the sit to need this done.

How is that crankshaft adjustment done?

Some movement at the pulley is normal when the clutch is released even if the crankshaft end play is OK. That looks like a real good one. I'd jump on it for that money. Tires alone are nearly half that price. Looks like a front hub is missing.

I just talked to the guy selling the 45 JD A and offered him the $1000 for it if he throws in a bunch of Allis chalmers cultivator bars and sweeps I noticed he had laying in a heap. They would fit my Allis Chalmers "G" I'm restoring..he sounded interested but is gonna think on it. He'll call me back tonite.

Sunday i buy a 1945 JD A. We came to an agreement on the price and i also get the AC mid cultivator bars and a slew of sweeps.

I will post back later with the results of a running tractorand more pics of it... Yay!!

Also does anybody know the width of this tractor at the rear tires with them extended all the way out??

Loaded and on the way home

Hopefully it's running by Super Bowl time...I have two hours

(quoted from post at 10:21:40 02/04/19) Did you make it?

I did get it to fire a few times but it would only run for about 15-20 seconds and die.

Today I cleaned out the Carb and made a new ring gasket for the bowl cuz I was leaking a bit.

It's been farmerized a bit like the magneto has been taken off. not sure what they did to it cuz it was real dirty inside. I tried to take the mag off the tractor but it didn't want to just pull off. Maybe i'm missing something there...any tips for removal??

i do get spark when it snaps but not sure it's in the right spot. it does spark on the left plug when the LH impulse on the flywheel towards the rear lining up when the raised mark on the case. Is that right?

I have actually never worked on a JD A with the magneto but have worked on old farmalls with mags

Any help would be greatly appreciated
