Early Styled B

I am in the process of replacing the manifold on my 1945 "B". The old one has developed a hole in it. I got the manifold off and am in the process of getting the rusty studs out of the head. I have removed 3 of the 4 studs. I'm surprised that the studs thread into the head such a little way. The holes for the 3 that I have removed are 7/16, 9/16, and 5/8 inch deep. Doesn't seem like that would be enough to be able to tighten enough to stand being torqued. Is this normal and has anyone has any trouble with them?

I just got the manifold off my late A. There's only 5/8 of full thread on the lower end of the studs. That's enough for a 7/16. I raised the manifold up and cut the studs with a hacksaw easily. I was expecting Gr 8 but these cut like Gr 5.

The reason is; there are pushrod tubes that go through the head. If your bolts or studs were any longer, they would go through the tubes and cause you a big headache. Pushrod tubes are available from www.handjmachining.com/

How thick is the nut on top ? you only need the same amount of threads on the bottom to hold it too.
