Enter your model number and you can view parts diagram for whole tractor online.

You found a spring in the bellhousing when you split the tractor. In previous posts folks gave you the best "straight" answers they could without being there and having hands on your tractor.

You replaced the flywheel, new or used? Did you install a complete new clutch set up or reuse the old one? Some clutch discs will drag if installed backwards. I don't know if those discs are that way.

I don't have a technical manual as I don't have a 5200, but I know there are often specific steps in the manuals to follow, in a specific order, for proper adjustment of machine components, especially many clutches. Do you have the technical manual for your tractor? Do you have all the John Deere information for your clutch and did you follow all the adjustment steps? This would include any checks and adjustments (there might be several) from the installation on the flywheel to the final pedal free play adjustment.

hojojn64 has given you the info to find the free on-line parts catalog so you can compare all the drawings for the 5200 series to what you see on your tractor for parts to see if anything is missing.

Thank you very much I may misspoke using the phrase "straight answer " as to the questions we never took the clutch pack apart just reinstalled the old one
The flywheel was new
very little money so no manual they want $250
I did read a forum on this series clutch having very similar problems I also was able to look at the parts diagram and the only spring that looked right is not labeled it's on the very bottom of the drawing
again thank you for your time and consideration

There may well be clutch set up info in the manual that might help solve your problem. Some clutches require adjusting the fingers as the clutch gets assembled. I'm not sure if yours does or not. If you bought the flywheel from a JD dealer you might ask if they would be kind enough to give you a copy of the set up (from the flywheel out) and adjustment info for your clutch, from their manuals. Some will, some won't. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, by asking.

I know manuals are expensive but they are a useful tool. Keep watch on eBay for a used manual (TM1520 for the 5200 series). There is one on there now for $150 plus shipping. Good Luck

Did you have to replace the flywheel due to clutch wear?

If so, what was done with the lined plate and pressure plate assembly, was it disassembled, and the plates ground and the lines plates replaced and the fingers set up properly?

My thought is that the popped-out spring is supposed to be in the pressure plate assembly to push plates apart when the clutch is depressed (or the PTO engaged).

In that case, there should be at least 2 more identical springs arranged symmetrically around the pressure plate assembly,

It's unlikely (impossible) there'd just be the one.

Of course, that stray spring could be a leftover from someone's previous mucking around in that area, and it MAY not be missing from the current pressure plate, at all.

As others have told you there's a LOT to inspect and set up properly when doing a clutch job, not to mention a complicated pressure plate like this with both traction and PTO clutches.

You REALLY need a service manual and having someone who's familiar with those clutches would sure be a plus!

Rookie822: Down loaded this PDF repair manual. It only costs $29.99.

The manual number is TM 1520. This where I got mine for my JD 5210. I have a copy on my computer and one on a memory stick.

Your just running in the dark by putting the tractor back together without figuring out where the spring came from. Without pictures of seeing the tractor the rest of us are just wild guessing. So buy this online manual and then you can look at how it is supposed to be and see where your tractor is different.
