1010RS Gas won?t run

Was blowing snow Sunday and the tractor quit. No weird noises, just shut off and wouldn?t restart. I had weak and intermittent spark at the points. I put in a new condensor and it wasn?t any better. I put in a new coil thinking that was the issue and it didn?t improve. I am not getting much spark at the points and nothing at the plugs. I am kind of stumped where to go next. Coil is getting power, and points are getting power.

Something went bad at the key switch maybe?

You could take a volt meter to the coil and see if its getting enough voltage?

Do you have the external resistor or the one in the key switch?

I assume you've checked the wires for a bad connection?

Sounds electrical to me.

Do you have a 6VDC or a 12VDC coil?
the 1010's were originally built with a 6VDc coil and there was a resistor on the key switch or an eternal resistor. This was needed as the tractor had a 12VDC electrical system.

The reason behind the 12VDC system and a 6VDC coil is that when you went to start the tractor it supplied 12VDC to the coil. This gave you a bigger spark and helped starting. When the tractor was running and the key was in the "run" position is sent the 12VDC thru the resistor and it knocked it down to 6VDC for normal operation.

At this point, I would measure the voltage at the coil. Do you have 12VDC when cranking and 6VDC when running?

Take a jumper wire from the battery and connect it directly to the coil, but install a switch in between the battery and coil to kill the power. Try to start it, if it runs then you know you have an electrical problem. Also, don't let it run for too long if you have a 6VDC coil as 12VDc will burn it out.
