36 john deere A ..

Hello- I bought a 36 john Deere A Tractor from a friend and he is going to deliver it Saturday. what I wanted to know is that there's a rectangular box behind the fly wheel with a gear lever sticking out, What is this for ? this tractor belonged to my friends father and he couldn't remember. I will take pictures when I get it- it's an older restoration, Thanks -mike

I think that's a Behlan overdrive. My limited understanding is that it was an aftermarket add-on that would give a road gear to tractors that didn't have one. The lever should be mounted on the rear of the case/box and move right-left parallel to axle. Someone will surly chime in who knows that they're talking about . . .

Overdrive unit as the others said. I have never ran a tractor with one though so I'm not 100% sure how you are to operate it ? The regular transmission may need to be in neutral and then shift that overdrive box into gear is my guess. Otherwise I'd think you will get into two gears at once.

Thanks to all who replied, I kind of thought it was a road gear device, I was on line trying to find a manual or operator book but no luck, Thanks again everybody -mike

I had one like that years ago, you leave the middle (long) stick in neutral and then shift the over drive lever,,after that you can use the right lever for high/low...mine went a little over 20mph.

That box and lever gives your 4 speed A a fifth and sixth gear. Make sure the transmission shift lever is in neutral, engage the lever on the overdrive. If your high/low lever is in the low side, you'll be in fifth. If it is in the high side, you'll be in sixth. I grew up on a '40 A that had the aftermarket road gears. Good luck with your "new" A.

Thanks for all the replies. Thought about taking it off but after some research, I think that is beyond my skill level. Not sure I would like a 20mph 1936 A. Which way do you move the lever for off while sitting in the seat? Left or right?

You can treat it like it wasn't there,,you will need original parts to take it off,,you can't just "take it off".

sitting on the seat, move the lever to your right (towards the tractor) to disengage the overdrive. If I were you I would play with it a little, you may like 5th. AKA overdrive with high/low in the low side.
