JD 2040 Fuel Filter change issue

I have a 1979 JD 2040 tractor that I changed the fuel filter on. after changing the filter, I had the tractor running but then it died. I'm assuming that I have air in the fuel line, but I can't figure out how to bleed the air from the lines. I tried to use the fuel transfer pump manual primer, but there doesn't seem to be any compression when I pump the lever. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks,

Tap the starter button so the engine turns a bit, this should move the "high point" of the cam away from the fuelpump lever, enabling the use of the hand primer.

Should be a bleed plug at the filter, NOT sure what the injection pump has for a bleeder.

Bleeder screw on IP is key 19

If it ran a bit, then air is in the lines and the manual pump may not help much.
Remove the bleeder screw on the pump as shown by Txjim and crank the engine til a
full stream squirts out of the bleeder screw port. Put the screw back in and it
should go unless there is air in the lines between the pump and the injectors. If
so, then you will have to loosen the line to the injector and crank til there is a
full flow of fuel...for each injector.

. Pull the manual lever away from the engine to preload the spring . Now let the spring push on the diaphragm and it also reign the manual lever to it’s home position .
Just replaced the primary pump on the 1640 a month ago . It had almost quit pumping .

Thank you all for the tips. I started bleeding the lines yesterday, but temps were too cold outside for working, so my attempt didn't last long. I'll hopefully get everything bleed this weekend and will let you all know if I have any trouble.

it took a couple hours of priming and bleeding the air out of the lines but I finally got my tractor running again.

Good to know you had success .
The lever on the pump works by pulling it away from the engine and letting the spring retract the handle while it pushes fuel .
Those fuel filters have an optional heater and thermostat to prevent fuel waxing if caught with some #2 fuel in cold weather .
