2555 good bad and ugly

I've been offered a 1992 jd 2555. I've never been around one of these tractors. Its got 4x4, canopy, 5800 hours, high/low range, loader and a brand new hydraulic pump put in at a dealer. any idea what it weighs? What should I look for when making my decision? Anything to be aware of? Thanks

The brand new hydraulic pump would make me run far, far away!!!! These tractors are routinely miss diagnosed as having a "Bad" hydraulic pump when in reality they have internal hydraulic issues. Then add in that it has been a loader tractor. A loader tractor is rarely babied.

I will suggest to check coolant PH & check operation of hyd's at operating temp(195-200 °F).

I agree with JD Seller that many frt hyd pumps have been replaced when that pump wasn't at fault. 5800 hrs shouldn't normally cause frt pump to fail.

Am I remembering right that if it's a "4X4" (MFWD) it has the synchronized transmission? That's a plus. However, just the gears are synchronized, not the ranges. But that's very common for tractors of that vintage, no matter what the color. Power reversers were available. They're much better for loader work. About 90% of utility tractors of that size see use on a loader at some time.

Our 2755 hydraulic pump seized up at about 6000hrs we replaced it and still going after another 4000hrs so yes they do fail.

If you can avoid all the pitfalls of the hydraulic woes that befall these tractors, then you will have yourself an incredible machine. Our 2550 is a 65 horse tractor that acts like an 80 horse tractor.

If you do run in to hydraulic problems, the advice from the folks on this forum will be invaluable!

I would say, after performing the checks suggested above, to go for it. Of course, that would depend on the price...

I’ll echo the same thing. My 2550 is a great tractor, now. But it had some hydraulic gremlins that cost a small fortune to find and fix. It helps a lot if you have someone or a shop you can rely on that understands what to look for if you do have a problem. Not all shops have a mechanic that understand these systems.
