WICO X FOR L JOHN DEERE LAG ANGLE

I HAVE WICO X /XH909 SET UP FOR L JOHN DEERE. SPRING CUP HAS 2040 STAMPED ON IT. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS IS SET UP FOR 20, 25, 30 LAG . ALSO WHAT WHAT NUMBER OF DEGREES BETWEEN REFERENCE POINTS(5)? SEEMS EVERY POST I GO TO I READ DIFFERENT SETTINGS.

The Wico manual CD set from fleabay doesn't mention reference points but does state that 2040 is the correct cup and the lag angle is 20 degrees. They keep mentioning a table but it's not in the manuals time and again there is no further information because there is no table and the manuals have consistent page numbers - So I'm not sure what to make of that nameless table that doesn't exist.

Cap X5770, rotor pictured as X5617 is called X5761 in spreadsheet data field for XH-909. Transposing errors while not common in factory manuals can and do exist.

So it would appear that your timing advance is all in at 20 while they most often like 25 to 28 BTDC running. To me that means you'll have to have the magneto set to trip impulse right on the safe side of kickback which might be as much as 5 degrees BTDC and that would get your combined (initial + lag angle) running advance into the ballpark at least.

There is almost no further useful information in the CD set, so not much point in getting one unless you want all that they have on file for these. Some files have errors and can't be used. But if you look further, there is usually another file that will cover the model you need to look at.

thanks for info
hand cranking the l with Hercules engine(rebuild out of frame) gets to be a problem even when firing well, as we get older. the wico x mag (rebuild) is set one short mart to left of center long mark. so this can't be right can it ?

Yes, it sure could be but I'm just guessing.

How far away is it from center long mark? Measured inches please. Have you double checked that center long mark is TDC? Diameter of flywheel where marks are at also needed and rotation of flywheel is counter clockwise? I can't even begin to say without that information. Anyone can scribe a mark anywhere. But to the left of TDC mark is where impulse needs to be as that would be BTDC as described in my first post. Question then is how many degrees is it? If it's too much, it will want to kickback, if it's just right it can still be Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) but because of the great mechanical advantage so close to TDC one can still muscle it over with momentum and it will even start good like that.
