The original subject was "fuel pump on a jd 5525".

We've had a unit(5525) since new and has had this bleed back back problem from day one and it has only gotten worse. I asked my dealer about it and he told me to start it once a day and I said that was like blowing up a flat tire and not fixing the leak. Then he suggested putting an electric fuel pump on unit and letting it pump up on pressure before starting. Again just put air in flat tire!!!! I replaced the check valve down by the bottom of transmission-rear end on right side and lines but have not solved problem.

One possible solution is to build a return tube that reaches the bottom of the tank instead of the stock and very short sighted way of just dropping fuel in the top of the tank. When running then, any air gets purged out of the system entirely and sitting for long periods of time off there is no air entry method except thru injectors that aren't closing properly. For worn out systems in particular, I'm sure this would cut cranking time by a drastic amount. For better results put a large quarter circle bend at the bottom, one that would feed into the return hole at the top. This way a little down pressure when assembled would tend to keep the return tube from vibrating to fatigue and breaking off in the tank. Or one could just plumb the return into the bottom externally, but this requires draining the tank. The problem with electric lift pump solution is that the IP typically doesn't have enough bypass flow thru it to effectively purge the air out in the short time the typical user would want to sit there waiting to start the tractor and use it.

Check all the rubber fuel lines. They are prone to have cracks in them that allow them to allow air in but not fuel out. I replaced them on brand new tractors with less than 10 hours on them. It is an age thing. if they set on the lot long some of them went bad. IRC they are just regular fuel line on hose barbs. I used US made hose and stopped the problem.

Also the electric fuel pump is not a bad idea. The later serial numbers have an electric from the factory. IRC.
