i'm going to go look at a 2520 with a loader. owner states to started smoking and spiting oil out the crankcase breather. time for a rebuild or is there something else that could be causing this?

I wonder how many hours engine has been operated since intake/exhaust valve clearance has been checked/adjusted? I'll suggest to check engine compression also.

Gas or diesel? Check the oil level...transfer pump or injection pump could have leaked gas/fuel into
the crankcase overfilling it causing the excess smoke and puking out the breather. If not that
possible scored piston?

Ask owner how he starts the tractor in cold weather, does he plug it in or use ether. If he used to much ether he could have damaged rings and will need a rebuild kit or more.

I bought a 2520 that was supposed to be recently rebuilt. It started spitting oil and water out the breather tube. Turns out the block was so damaged from cavitation that the liners wouldn?t seal. Former owner had dumped a lot of stopleak in it.

Sounds to me like it locked up the rings on one of the pistons. I did that to a 4010 years ago that was ran to long with a bad injecter. I replaced the injecters and started chopping corn silage and only ran a few hours untill I had the same thing lots of blowby and oil out the breather. Antifreeze in the oil will also cause lots of blowby and slobbering out the breather. A pin hole in a liner will lets compression and small amounts of antifreeze in the crankcase which must vent somewhere so increased blowby and oil out the exhaust. The blowby shows up long before enough antifreeze gets in the oil to change it's color. You more than likely need engine work. If cheap enough do not worry about it as there are other engines that will fit and plenty of parts to be had to fix the one that is in it now. A 2520 is a nice and very useful tractor with a good bit of collecter value. Even having a replacement engine does not hurt the value of them. We have a 1972 2520 here. Tom
