4440 Main Hydraulic Pump Filter

Gentlemen in the 4440 owners manual it shows to have the dealer clean the main hydraulic pump filter at 1200 hours. On the JD Parts Catalog under the hydraulic stroke control valve it shows this but only on the original 49 CM 3 pump and located above a drain plug with a spring. I'd guess this hasn't ever been done on mine tractor has 5500 hours and the pump started whining a little under load and right at start up so I wanted to do along with the trans filter and screen. I asked some local guys that have farmed with 30/40 series tractors their whole lives and neither knew of that front pump filter. My question is there any reason that this is specifically called to be done by a dealer? I see that it is spring loaded is a bunch of stuff going to pop out or is it fairly straight forward?

I have only seen on rare occasions that the pump filter you refer to was dirty enough to require cleaning. My 4255 with over 10,600 hrs pump filter has never required cleaning.

The filter is not spring loaded but a spring
is inside it. There is "stuff" to fall out.
I doubt the filter is causing your whining.

I agree with D-,,forget this idea and go on....I change these filters when I re-seal a pump,,and only then...

I'm not sure what your weather is like, when it gets colder here the front hyd pump on my 4430 will whine for quite a while until the oil warms up.

That filter basically filters the oil going to the stroke control valve,,not all the oil being pumped goes through it..

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll just not mess with that front filter. Not sure why it's whining, does it in the Summer also. Grunts at startup and then whines lightly starting around 1600 RPM, after that engine is getting so loud can't tell if it goes away. Never did that before last Spring.
