JOHN DEERE 630 UPDATE

Just finished putting transmission shafts and new bearings back in. Next will be shifting fork assembly. I decided to take the fork assembly out of my 620 parts tractor and go back with
the parts with the least amount of wear from both. The Two short shafts from 620 were the same part number with less wear. Ill use them. The long shaft was different 630 shaft had
detent hole cut a little different also had 2 notches cut underneath. 630 had a different type of spring loaded latch the 620 didn't have. What were these upgrades suppose to fix. Looks
like more things could go wrong with upgrades to me. Could i use which ever system is the tightest or stay with newer shaft? Shifting forks look most complicated to reassemble. Hope it
goes better than im expecting.

Upgrades were supposed to stop "popping out of gear" and "securely" locked the shift mechanism to the rails until there was operator motion of the shift lever to tug them to another position.

In my experience, once they "see" a lot of hours and wear, they aren't as good at that as when they were new.

Guess I personally would keep the newer-style setup unless BADLY worn, and the old-style setup was like new.

(AFAIK, many of the parts can be interchanged as an assembly, but not individually.)

If worn a lot up where the shift lever contacts I build them up with nickel welding rod and grind them back to original profile. Really helps tighten them up and get rid of shifter slop.
The newer style shifters would be best to use. Just recondition any worn areas in the interlock.
See if JD still sells new pawl springs. They used to be pretty cheap.
