2030 engine questions

Hi all. I just picked up an engine out of a 2030. Model #4219DR06. I got it from a repair shop that removed it when the owner noticed water in the oil. Rather than tear it apart and rebuild it, the owner opted to swap in another used motor. The guy at the shop said it fired up and ran perfect when they pulled it in the shop. No knocking or other strange noises. They pulled it and it sat on the floor for several weeks. He got tired of it taking up space so he put it on CL for $100. I picked it up mainly so I could tear it down and see how it worked. I have a 3020 and the motors are similar. When I got it home, I drained the oil which was a little dirty, but because it sat for a while was not milky. There was some sludge I the pan but no metal of any kind. I'm going to cut open the oil filter and see if there's anything in it as well. I also pulled the valve cover and rocker arms so I could pull the head to see if the head gasket failed. When I got it off, I couldn't tell if it was ok or not. I rotated the crank to look at the cylinder sleeves - they looked great (at least what I could see of them). My questions would be first, could one or more of the sleeves have leaked, or second, is there something else I can look for before pulling the pistons and looking closer at the block? The motor is complete with the exception of the water pump, stat housing, and exhaust manifold. Any ideas?
Thanks!

You got a steal of a deal. Most likely the sleeves are bad or the orings on the sleeves. Those engines are noted for that. Sometimes even the block itself will get damaged where the oring grooves are. Tom

Some differences between the Waterloo four cylinder and the Dubuque four cylinder . Starter and injection pump locations for a start .
Dubuque’s has better cylinderhead flow with the crosshead design.

Thanks Tom! From what I see, the parts are worth quite a bit (especially the injection pump).

I had a 2520 that I noticed a mixture of oil and water on the floor from the breather tube. Bad enough that I took it to the John Deere dealer. Turned out that not only the liner leaked but the block was ruined from cavitation. They said there was a machine shop they could take it to that could fix it but, of course, if it didn't work I'd be stuck for the labor. A new engine from Deere was within a thousand dollars of trying to fix the old block so I opted for that.

Actually that 2030 engine is "completely" different from your 3020...only thing common is they are both 4 cylinders...

We have a battle going on, Tim S says not even close B&D says close.

Should we open betting?

Those 3010/3020 engines are different than any other 4 cylinder Deere. My father-in law cracked a main bearing saddle in a 3020 probably 25-30 years ago and 3020 blocks, etc. were hard to find then already.

I will go with Tim. The only part they have in common is the green paint used on the outside. I have seen 219 engines transplanted into 3020's. Sometimes they look great other times they just like cobbled junk. At one time Deere supplied a kit to put a 219 or 239 in a 3020. Never seen one but have seen copies of the sales bulletins for them. A friend has a 239 with a turbo in his side console powershift 3020. My son ran it a few times and says it is impressive compared to my three stock old style 3020 diesels. Tom

You need to get deere 4030 engine rear plate and 2510,2520 or 4030 hydraulic pump support to make it work on your 3020.
You will loose a little strength on the chasdis because Deere did not made a 4 cylinders cast iron oil pan with the waterlloo rear bolt pattern.
Thats why I would go drectly to a 6 cylinders option for a transplant (same as 3420)

Ditto 2030 engine has 2 individual balancer shafts while 3020 has a balancer box plus as others stated a special adapter plate will be required to put a 219 CID engine in a 3020

Let me clear up a little confusion. The 3020 runs
fine - nothing wrong with it. I just picked up the
engine so I could tear it down. I was interested in
seeing how the JD motor worked. If I could get it
running, that would be a bonus. Just had a couple
questions about water in the oil.

Don’t know what you have been reading but jiat a couple are the starts and injections pumps are on the opposite sides .
And just for the record if it comes down to believing what I say and what Tim S says . Go with what Tim S says .

Can anyone direct me to where I can look up the serial# on the engine? I tried the Deere site, but didn?t have any luck.

Shown below is some information on 2030 serial number on tractors built for sales in N America BUT nothing on serial number as to what year manufactured.
