I was baling hay this summer and backed up
with my pto running. Jack knifed the
tractor sheared the bolts off the pto
shaft. Replaced the bolts went to start
baling turned the PTO on it stalled the
tractor tried it again and could smell the
clutch burning. I Took a trip around the
field and got the PTO to finally turn after
crossing an irrigation ditch. Does the
tractor need to be split

You got me thinking on that. Clutch might be slipping if the shifter was caught between 540 and 1000 RPM which in theory should be hard to do. If mine and I have done it with the 4010 I own I would split it just to make sure the shifter pin is free enough that when you tighten the 540 stub it shifts the gear sets where they need to be. Keep in mind shifting does not mean like sliding gears in an old 1940's vintage tractor. Given the age of the tractor and if the PTO clutch plate has been in for many years it would make sense to see how much wear is there. Jack-knifing is a definite problem for a PTO drive line but while you are at it make sure any PTO slip sleeves work freely without a hammer to persuade movement. Lubricate the slip sleeve while you are at it. The only time we ever damaged the PTO shifter on our 4010 was due to my own failing to make sure the bolts were tight from changing stub shafts. The tractor has run it share of heavy PTO loads including large manure spreader, 2 row forage harvester, and wire baler so its not like it has had a soft life. Again, with winter here and no presumable daily need for the tractor I would split it. Even if you needed it within a day you should be able to do it as my father and I had to do it when ours failed.

I agree with the post below. It tried to go into both 540 and 1000 at the same time. More than likely the drive pin on the pto shifter is bent some. It might last a long time or could fail the next time you need it. If it was mine I would split it and replace the pin. The gaskets you need are going to cost as much as the pin itself. Tom

If 4010 was my tractor & I had no need for 1000 rpm pto on it I would do as I have on several other 10 series JD tractors & convert pto to 540 only eliminating the tiny bendable speed shift pins.
