1958 420W split questiin

Attempting to replace gasket and oil seal, have two halves
separated about 5 inches but hesitant to go any further until I
figure out how to separate propeller shaft from drive shaft. The
diagrams in service manual indicate a roll pin covered by a
collar with a snap ring. I can't figure out how to move the
collar as it is partially covering the snap ring. Any direction
from this point would be appreciated.

After further examination I can see that the collar is welded to the tube covering the propeller shaft. It has to be moved forward, but how (heat, big hammer)? Any suggestions before I cause more damage than necessary? Please?

Where are you splitting the tractor at? I think you need to split the engine off of the torque tube first. Then disassemble the clutch throw out mechanism to remove the torque tube. I think...
Good luck.

I'm assuming your trying to split the tractor at the torque tube and transmission? Trying to replace the seal on the input shaft of the transmission?

The collar is welded on to the propeller shaft, there is a roll pin or cotter key that goes through the collar and input shaft. The only thing this cotter key does is hold the propeller shaft from pulling out of the input shaft when you split the tractor at the flywheel. Most likely the cotter key is sheared off because the splines have a lot of wear on them after 60 years of use, this is normal.

More details and pictures from you will help others help you.

Thank you, you are correct, split at tube and transmission. The
diagrams in the service manual don't appear to be what I have,
it is a high serial number. Am I just missing the roll pin?
Please see attached photos.

I think your looking at the wrong page in the service manual.

After reviewing the parts manual on jdparts.com. I am assuming that you have a live PTO or as they call it a continuous running PTO????

Look at the pic below, I think what your looking at is item #5 not item #1 thru #4. I may be wrong as you never told us what exact model or the PTO configuration. If I am correct, there is not roll pin / cotter key and it should slide apart, but since the splines are worn after 60+ years of service they are hung up. Take a pry bar and give it a littler nudge and see what happens.

Thank You, finding out my service manual pre-dates my exact model. I will have to go digital for some things it appears. I was able to move the covering with a little force to expose the shaft. I was just hesitant to get to aggressive until I knew what I was pounding on.
