JOHN DEERE 630 UPDATE

Well i have nothing but a empty 630 case blocked up in my shop. My bearing and race numbers are with a local bearnig distributer thats fillng my order. New question for you guys. Ive pulled the parts gears 4Th / 6th from a parts 620 we have. The top gear is great. The bottom was the hardest gear ive ever pulled. It did not have the two bolt holes to assist pulling. I used a three prong puller and also added heat . A good bit of heat 3 different times before it broke lose. Have i ruined the hardness of the gear by this?

Second question is about the aftermarket top radiator tank. Has anyone purchased one with good results? Thx for help.

That's the only way to do them, from an empty case ! I did not even know they made aftermarket tanks ?
I also do not know about gear heat treatments ? but if it cooled down on its own it might be fine ? I guess take a file to it and see if it seems the same hardness as the others ? JD 2 cyl. gears never did seem that hard of steel to me either ?

Yep, as long as you didn't actively cool down the gear and let it slowly cool you should be OK.
No idea about the top tank, sorry. I do have a extra core for a 630 though, if you haven't got one yet. Ordered one. Let the tractor sit for a while, and forgot what pars I had ordered... The first core got tucked away somewhere. Then I start working on the tractor and dad asked why I had two boxes the same size... Oops...

That's weird. My reply sort of shows up in classic view, but not at all in modern view. Weird site sometimes...
Anyhow, external link lists one. jds4174. $450.00

Are you replacing the top tank because the muffler mount is broken? If you are, have you seen this video? I have no personal experience with this repair. It looks a little fragile to me, but it could be viewed as a last gasp effort before springing for the top tank, plus a new filler neck, gasket and bolt set for the core. Last price I saw for this kit was in the neighborhood of $150, and you aren't disturbing the tank/core seal if it isn't presently leaking.

You may have another reason for changing the top tank.
Muffler bracket repair

I welded a muffler bracket with plain old 6011 rod running on AC. Go figure! It was before 1982 sometime because I did it in the old shop. It has held for thousands of hours since then. Nothing else would stick and blend to that crappy poor cast except for 6011.

Jim - I bought my 630 from a friend who had rolled it upside down, and the muffler bracket was broken in the crash. I welded it back together, and my neighbor backed under a low door and broke it again. So - I welded it a second time. I had a heavy duty exhaust flipper on it, and it would only clear the shop door with the flipper down. You know the rest of the story. It's been broken for 30 years, I guess. It breaks in a new place each time.

I used a stainless rod that my brother gave me. I think it was 308-16 or something like that. I don't remember it welding too bad, but I'm nervous about welding that close to the gas tank. I took the radiator off both times before, but I was young(er) then. It might still be broke when I'm dead and gone, ha.

I read you loud and clear about the gas tank. Come to think of it I welded it twice. Didn’t get it quite straight the first time but after I broke it the second time under a low door that was a half inch too low like your situation I made sure it was straight when I fixed it the second time.

Yes, the bracket has been broken and welded back. Muffler bolt holes broken off and stripped I cant stand to know its a shove away from being broke again. Very expensive fix to do it right.

Most of the large oval mufflers are practically enough weight to make it break....maybe a taller barn?
