4020 light question

What is the purpose of the resistor on the light switch?

Related to above, should my outer headlamps dim in high or work light modes? They are full bright in Low-beam position.

Are the inner or outer lights supposed to be high beam? I have heard conflicting info and just need a solid answer.

I have asked around about all of these questions and cannot seem get answers.

Thanks

may have made it work now!

Good afternoon all,

I have a few questions.

I have a nineteen seventy forty twenty diesel synchro row crop

What is the purpose of the resistor on the light switch?

Can't help you with the resistor, but according to the operator's manual:
Lightswitch at:
L: bright headlights and white taillight.
B: Bright headlights and red taillight
D: dim headlights. On tractors with dual fender-mounted headlights, the inner lights are turned off and the outer flood lights remain on. On tractors with bracket-mounted headlights, the headlights are dimmed. The red taillight remains on.

According to this pdf downloadable link as item #1, the outside lights are high beam and they are connected to a dash light that indicates high beam state just like automobiles have. Absolutely positively high beam then.

Light switch positions and corresponding circuits energized are shown as a text list in the pdf.

Somebody has probably rewired things and hopefully you can figure out how to put it back to factory wiring.

Purpose of resistor on light switch is to boost generator output when high beams are on so that system voltage doesn't suffer a no charge situation.
