2755 steering and hydraulics question

I have a 2755 open station with hydrostatic steering. I had to move it about 20 miles last summer; as I drove, I noticed the location of the spinner knob moved in relation to the wheels being pointed straight. (i.e., the knob wasn't always at 8 o'clock when the wheels were straight; it slowly changed places). The further I went, I noticed I needed to pump the brakes to get good response. When I arrived at the location, the tractor lost steering function until it sat for a little while (I was able to brake-steer the tractor). The steering has always had a "catch" before the wheels start turning and the wheels will frequently slowly turn one way or the other without steering input.

At this point, my best guess is the steering valve under the dash is worn and needs to be replaced. To me, that explains the change in relative position of the steering wheel and the "catch" in the steering, as well as the front wheels turning without steering wheel input. An internal leak would cause the hydraulic oil to get hot and lead to the temporary loss of steering under summer operating conditions and the degraded brake function.

Is there something else I'm overlooking or need to think about? Are the aftermarket steering valves acceptable?

It's not unusual for the steering wheel to change on them going down the road, and the brakes are hydraulic, but not power, so the only pressure you get is what you make hitting the pedal,,

The slow drifting of the spinner knob over time, as you drive, is NORMAL for a hydrostatic "orbitrol" steering valve.

I'm NOT sure about the "catch" in the steering, but the rest of your problems seem to me more like an oil pressure/flow problem, possibly air getting into the system.

I'm NOT at all familiar with the rest of hydraulic system on that particular tractor, such as the pump, flow divider (if used) and priority valve (if used), so I'll leave it up to others to comment on those areas.

"Are the aftermarket steering valves acceptable?"

If it DOES come to that, DEERE didn't make the valves in the first place, parts catalog shows they were made by Char-Lynn (now Eaton) and gives part numbers. (CHAR-LYNN NO.262-1001-073, if NOT equipped with front wheel drive.)

With engine running, hyd oil at operating temp(200 ° F),3 pt raised look in hyd filler opening rear of seat for moving oil which would indicate leaking rockshaft control valve seals.

Does this tractor have a frt end loader mounted on it? Have brakes been bleed lately? Does tractor have scv's? Does tractor have hyd hi-lo &/or hyd pto?

Front end loader: No
Brakes haven't been bled.
Tractor has one SCV, but it is not in use, as the
tractor has a mounted boom mower, which doesn't
use the tractor hydraulic system.
No Hi-Lo; tractor has a mechanically shifted creeper
transmission.
PTO: not sure, as it is not used.

Forgive me for stepping in, but I wanted to say:

Tx Jim, I want to sincerely thank you for your patience in dealing with our collective lack of knowledge of the Mannheim Monsters' hydraulic systems. L.C. sounds like he's in the same boat I've been in (and many others, as well). And I've witnessed you systematically and calmly deal with each new person's issue with composure.

Hat's off to you, sir!

Now on with the problem solving!

Thank you for the kind words. Trying to help members solve/repair hyd problems is much easier today than back in the days when I served as a dealer service manager. Trying to help members solve tractor/equipment questions helps keep my aging, pea size brain functioning.

It never ceases to amaze me the knowledge of some of the other members on this discussion forum
Thanks,Jim

Did this problem ever get fixed? Having the same problem only after running down the road and getting it hot. Loses steering function.
