2040 battery, lift ,starting questions

What battery fits in a 2040? Will a group 31 fit?

When the 3 point hitch all the way down how far off the ground is the lift arms? When I put my lift arms down they still seem farther off the ground than they should be.

Any tips or tricks to help it start in cold weather? Does it have any where to plug it in?

I just brought this tractor yesterday
Thanks

A group 31 likely will fit, a tape measure will confirm and it will have more cranking power than the single battery option some came with. In the parts catalog it looks like they used group 24 batteries 550 CCA @ 0, either 1 or two batteries depending on the option.

Have you tried adjusting the lift links? They will change the height of the draft links.

Those tractors (1020, 2030, 2040, etc.) used a coolant tank heater, as there is no location an in block heater fits. If it has one you should see it on the left side of the engine. Rocking the steering wheel to relieve hydraulic pressure helps on some.

Some may disagree but I recommend investing in the John Deere operators and service/technical manuals (OEM, used, or quality reprint of OEM), if you are going to keep the tractor. For some places to purchase manuals; try the store for this site, eBay, or https://techpubs.deere.com/. You can use the on line parts manuals to save purchasing that one. Have your serial number available to check incase there is a manual specific to your S/N range.

Does your new to U 2040 have a 3 or 4 cyl engine? If it has a 3 cyl engine is the serial number below 266750 which indicates tractor has open center hyd's? I think a group 31 battery will fit in battery box just fine. In colder climates JD recommended two 12 volt batteries attached in parallel.

For easier starting especially in colder weather as previously stated you could install a coolant tank heater. That 2040 has closed center hyd's so while attempting to start engine utilizing a hyd pump destroking screw or rapidly turning steering wheel from side to side will help ease hyd pump load on starter.

Looks like the previous operators were slobs if they couldn’t keep the radiator screens on the tractor . Look around for other items that have been let go. Odds are 99.999999% the transmission shift boots are rotten and are letting rain water into the transmission .
Use a coolant test kit and measure the coolant’s Ph and the amount of active corrosion inhibitor .
Pull the transmission oil filter and transmission screen for a look. If they are brand new , be just as leary as if they were full of brake friction material. Do the brakes moan or grab?
