JOHN DEERE 630 UPDATE

I have my crankshaft, block and head at the machine shop. Camshaft is mailed off to Hill Crest cam repair to be brought back to specs. New pistons on the way. Powertrol and final drive is off and currently dismantling the transmission. I have all shaft but the bottom out and its a pill. All the gears look really good except the two under the left side metal cover behind flywheel. The top one was scrap, 6 or 7 teeth were sheered off. dont know how the guy was running it at all. Crazy because it was an old injury and someone left that gear in after a repair because no metal teeth was found in the bottom of cover . Those two gears will get replaced. I pryed on all the shafts while they were in and found minimal play. Bearings were surprisingly good to be sitting in water for who knows how long. Believe ill just replace all bearings while there. The upper shaft that separates, has a gear that slides over another gear has a little play when coupled and not sure how tight it should fit. Very big project but hoping for a sound 630 for the future. If I can manage to get it all back together. Its seems to be a little more complicated than the 430 we just finished.

I think those 30 series are some of the most beautiful out there, will be nice machine.

Good call on replacing bearings while in there.

That is the 4th and 6th speed IIRC so it is road gear and likely got damaged by a speed shifter trying to hit road gear on the fly.

On the top shaft. The high and low gear set. How tight of fit are they suppose to be. Mine have a slight bit of slack when they are engaged. Wish I was smart enough to post pictures . would.

If any of you guys that know what the shafts and gears should look like, after 58 years, I would love to text or email you photos to get your thoughts. My phone is 601-325-8095. Text me and I will send photos of iffy gears. Thx

Be sure to check your lockers on shifters and make sure they are in great shape...also the upper shaft for wear at the 1/3 gear position as they were used extensively in this position 3 rd gear...pulling planters and roading with backlash and speed shifting as trashed your 4/6 gears...be sure the splines on the end are in great shape...it's also critical to adjust the transmission in the proper locations....the adjusters are the donut type screws in left hand of the main case...I'm sure you've spotted them...very critical to get the gear lined up....with that three piece pedestal you can use the lower two pieces...visually adjust the gears then put the lower parts on and make sure they will go in gear....I've even see the slots cut a little deeper at times...but you should be okay if was messed up....good luck...

Not sure I follow the question ? But if the reduction gear cover is already off the input shaft is not being held in position can will make things look worse and looser than it will be when assembled.
