630 three point hitch down spring

How do you get the big spring that goes from the left hand three point arm down to the sway block back on? The spring has been off of my 630 since I don't remember when and I would like to put it back on just because it's supposed to be there. The three point hitch has worked without a hickup all this time without it but I would like it on there. It probably was left off way back in the 227 mounted corn picker days when I had to remove the hitch to facilitate the picker every year. Which reminds me, I don't ever want to go back to those days!

Yep, there's a S hook. Then put a bar through the hook and pry that sucker down and into the hole on the elephant ear.
Where to pry, you ask? Anywhere you can...
I just remember it was a pain in the tuckas...

Hi fixerupper - Little or no prying required. Years ago I learned the trick from guy by name of Don Ward ( now deceased ) from
Missouri Trick is to use overhead hoist and stretch spring from heavy object ( like drawbar ) . I stretched from front mounting
plate for cultivator, plate had convenient hole for hooking spring and a nice height for working. When spring is stretched, insert
many spacer blocks between coils. I used 1/8 inch flat steel. When spring is stretched sufficiently, release from hoist stretched
position. Then install on hitch. Then raise/lower the hitch and spacer pieces simply fall out all on their own, and you are all
set. Does require a little bit of time, but minimal struggle.

How clever!!! I got one to do on the 720, been put off for that reason. Lets see...slice a 3/16 piece off a 2x4, cut in 2 to 3 inch long pieces, stretch spring, insert pieces, yeah that would do it. Gotta try it. Thanks

Thanks Jon! That's one of those ideas that make me feel really stupid for not thinking of it myself.

(quoted from post at 19:33:53 12/13/18) I?m not sure, but I think the 620 and 630 require a link between the spring and where it hooks.

That’s right, I forgot about that goofy looking S hook. I can picture it hanging on a nail in the machine shed. If it’s not there I looked up the pn for it if I have to order one.

As I recall the S hook was the problem and it was on the weak side. One of the new links with the screw coupler would work better but wouldn't be police correct...per other stretch out and put spacers then install and remove. Actually it was a P Poor design and I bet many on them were plowed under. It did however keep the jarring action off the lift which may have caused some problems to the internals. the upright clylinder on the 20 and 30 series had tremendous pressure limits. Was an overdesign when they went to the 3 point, however they were toting some large mounted plows. One thing that got frequently overlooked was the carry bracket that saved wear on the cylinder when unit was transported. But remember this was the first years when Grandpa was introduced to 3 point and sometimes if could have been surprising it he used it at all.

The new S hook came from that ‘S’ company the other day. Looks pretty light for the job it has to do. I’m kind of expecting to hear a Big Bang when I raise the 3pt and find a spring hanging limp. Time will tell.

Why don't you use the quicklink or a regular quick link and you don't that to worry about that comtraption….or weld the loop shut....I say it was a poor design from Deere on the get go and why you don't see the springs....
