3020 Counter rotating balancer

Anyone have experience with the Counter Rotating Balancer for the 3020 diesel engine? Have been warned against buying a 3020 for this reason. Saying they go out all the time and are IMPOSSIBLE to replace or find parts for. Recommended replacing the entire engine if the balancer failed????

In my 43 years with JD, I might have repaired about 6 units. Don't let this scare you from buying a good 3020. We had many many 3020's go through our shop. We once had a 219ci. engine that had balancer shafts fail. We removed them and pluged oil holes. No detechable differance in vibration. You could do the same on a 3020. You might want to reduce high idle about 10% .

I'd worry IF the balancing box is worn and you can't get parts. They held up fine, but can and will wear out just like anything else. If it's worn, it can wind up blowing the engine and I've seen several do it. I fixed many of those boxes years back (I was a Deere mechanic) but can't say what parts are available now. My neighbor's 3020 had a bad balancing box last year and he opted for buying a complete used engine instead of trying to fix the box.

All four cylinder engines have a natural inbalance problem once they get over a certain size. With Deere, they used twin balancing shafts in some (450, 2020,400), and a balancing box with gears in others (500,3020).

As far as taking the shafts out of an engine and plugging the holes like the other poster mentioned? Deere did it for a few years for cost cutting in the 210 backhoes. We had many vibration problems, especially as lower RPMs. They vibrated bad enough at certain low engine speeds that the exhaust stacks would shake and crack. Deere's fix at the time was to start putting those shafts back in.

I'm not sure if I'm writing this in the right space. Sorry if not. I'm working on my dad's late 3020 with the 270 balancer box. I've found the gears I need and bushings for it. I started with taken off the keeper rings that hold the shaft in. Got them off fine but the shafts don't pull out easy. Could you help me with explaining how they should come out properly? Then how I should go about getting the bushings out and new ones back in. I got plenty of diagrams showing me how they go together and proper bushing inset. But can't find anything on how to actually do it in person. Thanks in advance for any help.

You need the John Deere factory service manual asap. This will cost too much and take too long learning as you go by trial and error . 1-800-522-7448

Thank you I'll order one. Will it go into good detail on how to rebuild the balancer?

Go to eBay and get an original Deere factory manual for a 1/3rd the price of John Deere and you’ll have a better manual than the new style reprint Deere publishing sells . And yes you can still buy all the parts to rebuild the box last time I looked from John Deere

eBay has several listings for used balancers right now at one point I think it was also all states had a reman engine balancer

EBay is where I found all the parts I needed. I have the original technical manual plus a service manual. It says to just remove the snap rings and press on small end of balalancer shaft. I pressed pretty hard. Just wanted to make sure there isn't something I missing that is not in this book.

I bought a 3020D awhile back and it had a terrible vibration in it. I took it to a former deere tech who is out on his own now and he said someone must've had it apart before because it was one gear tooth off, and that was causing most of the trouble. He did rebuild it as well and it's much better now. But I guess just make sure to get the gears timed correctly when you finish.
