Overcharging batteries 4440

4440 voltage meter is in the orange high side. Checked and batteries reading 16.6 volts running.

What causes this?

Some times low water level in the battery will cause this...some times a voltage regulator can also..
 

Well, did some digging and found the wires 1 and 2 from the alternator in poor shape. The wire insulation is brittle and broken and the copper wire just falls apart.
 
If still the original harness, the wire to #1 will actually be a single strand of nichrome resistance wire, and the wire to #2 will be a stranded copper wire.

If the #2 wire is broken, or the connection at the voltage regulator terminal is corroded, the alternator will default to a higher voltage setting.

Sounds like that may be what you have going on. If a Delco unit, the #1 and #2 regulator terminals are steel with a little tin plating on them and will rust over time GUARANTEEING a poor connection.
 
There was a kit available through deere to replace the wire that goes back to the cab, but haven't bought one for awhile.
 

Looking at replacing the wire harness. Anyone do this lately or have opinions on the harnesses at http://www.wiringharnesses.com/files/129876509.pdf
 
I have not used them, yet, but there have been many positive comments on these Boards about dealing with them.
 
The nichrome resistance wire should measure 11 Ohms when good..
A 10 Ohm 25 Watt ceramic resistor can be substituted along with
a #16 or #18 gauge copper wire.
The #2 terminal on the alternator reads battery voltage---
usually from the battery terminal on the starter solenoid.
Usual fix is to run a short #9 or #10 gauge wire from the hot
terminal of the alternator to the #2 terminal.

The advice on cleaning the connections is correct. We had 3
tractors with corrosion/ rust problems on terminals last summer.
I guessed that all the humid/ hot conditions were the cause.
