Gear box question

I think I know what this is for, but seems to be a piece missing. Can any of you help me out.

Wouldn't you need something to connect the two 540 male ends together ? Or did some of those have a removable stub shaft on the tractor end ?

JD & Mike, I think there should be an adaptor piece between this box and the transmission. But I've no idea what it should look like. Love to see a picture or reference to it on a parts page.

Looks like you could turn it around and reduce 1000 RPM to 540 RPM...of course you would need to take the Horse power used into consideration...this gear box looks sturdy..

Mystery solved, there was a stub shaft pushed into the 540 side. Managed to get it out and it fits right on the standard PTO shaft.

yes that looks better, now if you were planning on useing it the rule of thumb was to put a short pto shaft onto the end of the utility transmissions and then put the speed changer onto that. this helps eliminate some exessive torque on a long nose utility pto and breaking the ears off. we all have one of those that have been welded up, dont need any more.
i have never seen one on but question if a short pto shaft like on a rowcrop utility will fit onto a utility and then the speed unit because there is limited room with the big drawbar supports.
let us know or post a picture when you get it mounted.
