Rescently purchased a JD 40T Third gear is noisy, Can this be repaired buy only breaking the tractor apart or will I have to remove the transmission
Will this be a gear or bearing, I know very little about a transmissions. Thanks

The transmissions in those older tractors tend to get kind of noisy from wear on the gears over time. Seem to make the most noise in the gear where they were run the most. I would suspect it is somewhat worn gears. If you tear it down and change those the replacements will probably be used and may b just as moisy.

My question is can the gear / bearing be replaced by only breaking the tractor or does the transmission have to be removed
That looks like it could a major job

Take a look at the free JD parts online catalog PC 86. To get their just do a search for Model 40 , do not add the "T". You should be able to pull the top cover and shifting rod and see what the gears look like. Spiting the tractor at the transmission or rear of the center frame assembly will allow you access to remove the shafts holding the gears.
