Trying to find out if gears / bearings can be replaced on a JD 40T without removing the transmission
Can this be done by removing the top plate and breaking the tractor I have a 40 S with a noisy second gear and a 40 T with Third gear noisy
Thanks

Chasing transmission noise in a 60+ year old tractor has proven to be a waste of time over and over again. If it ain't broke don't fix it or waste your time and money trying. IMHO

You will have to split it apart to get the shafts out. I have found so many bad bearings in these old tractors when I go looking. New bearings will not always make the noise go away likely do to wear patterns ,but at least you know what's in there and it won't get worse.
