4020 Engine transplant - bad?

A few posts below this one references a possible late model 4020 that has a combine engine in it. My questions-
#1- Lets assume you are in the market for a 1969-72 4020. You are planning to keep for awhile and want to use for all around farm work and not haul around to shows and parades. Is a 69-72 4020 with a combine engine in it a "bad" thing? Will the tractor perform differently than a stock 4020? As far as resale, what might be the discount between 2 identical 4020's with one having a combine engine in it?
#2 - are 6620 and 7720's the combine models best suited for 4020 donors?

I wouldn't call them bad!.Usually combine motors have less hours and it seems like the 404 in the 6600 was nearly identicle. I have bought a couple one was nicely done 2520 gas that had 239 power unit motor I bought a 4320 and the oil filter was horizontal was the first clue.Guy that bought it just loves it.I don't know if there is much discount on a using tractor as the collector thing is a whole new deal. I know the 7700 T had a horizontal front pump and turbo and some of those pumps were made to run basically wide open so the pump didn't have enough low end.Honestly most people wouldnt know the difference. The Kinze conversions still bring quite a premium. JD even changed some engines in 4520s and 8640s.

The price is at $ 7500 right now. Not bad. Nice "old mans step" on it also. I would need that. LOL The issue is not whether it would be a good "working tractor" but let's face it, the 4020 market right now is as a collector tractor. It started out at $ 9000. I'm sure by the time he tells everyone all the truth. they drive away. One out of ten may be after it as a working tractor. There is NO mention in the ad, and no rear photo to even know if it has it's correct 3pt hitch or not. So , you give $ 7500 for it. What does a set of 18.4-38,s run today? What does a set of fronts run? I'm going to say, with mounting, $ 1500-$ 1800? So you are at $ 9000 . Powershift??? No mention of previous service/overhaul etc , they do not last 50 yrs last I knew. And lets say there is no 3 pt? Photos on craigslist are free and can post many...why not one of rear of tractor?? Priced a complete original 3pt lately ?? So, I see an easy $ 11- $ 12,000 into this unit...to make it a $ 10,000 tractor. My dollar will buy a correct one with very presentable paint/body etc for $ 12,000 and KNOW that when and if I decide to sell, I will break even at least. I try to keep my JD "hobby" an investment and not an expense. LOL Still married and plan to stay that way LOL That all said, To buy and use as is with tires and all, would probably make someone a good ole worker and not break the bank. If you want a low cost 4020 "worker" , this would probably be a good start. Depending on location, shipping might be a concern also. I live relatively close but would still have $ 400 in that since my trailer/truck is too light for it. Interesting post it has turned out to be. I've learned a lot from all in both posts.

Nicely done they are a good unit,,,I like the non turbo 404 engine for re-powering 4020's, it is a 4230 style engine, they run nice,a quieter engine with smooth power, same with a 466 non turbo engine,,they work out very nice..it's like putting a teen age heart into Grand Pa... and as for the rest of the tractor dealing with it that is no problem ether...

I repowered dads gas 4020 with a 404 from a 105 combine and it's the best starting Deere on the farm.

Local kids tractor. Had it maybe ten years and had good luck. He bought a Small dairy farm a few years back just as the milk prices were dropping. He used it on a mixer wagon for a year or so. He always talked good about this tractor, surprised its for sale. Hope he's doing ok, local dairy guys around here are really taking an azz whopping. Every time I see a neighbor it seems I here of one more guy shipping his cows. This kid really works hard. Day job with long hours, farm when ever not at work. Wife runnoft with a nother guy also. This guy could use some good luck,, Hope he makes it. Al

Poor guys life sounds like a country western song.Hope He gets it sold as it sounds like it works good. Its not a lot different than people wanting numbers matching cars but a good well done resto mod will sell well. In the tractors I like to sell are low houred originals but many times the trailer queens will steal the show. Of course now with the Rat Rod craze they are trying to make the cars and trucks look old and put huge engines in old wore out cars from the 40/50/60s many are just the tin work look old but have new under carriage.I have a nice 66 Nova SS that we put a new crate 350/350 H.P.that I really enjoy.I have some friends that like to tractor pull 4020s at local fun pulls that have combine 466 motors with the big pump which probably in their case maybe 350/400 H.P that smoke a lot and go down the track well. They did have to lengthen the frame which to me is noticeable.I think they did it themselves and they told me they gave around $2500 for good 466 combine motor.
