Removing muffler 4440

Any advice for removing a stuck muffler on a 1982 4440?

Removed the clamp and soaked with penetrating oil. No go.

My 4250 muffler was the same way. A combination of several things finally got it off. Slit the bottom with a cutoff saw, then heated it up and let it cool several times. Climbed on top of the motor so I could work it back and forth while dad beat on it from below.

Unfortunately, I can state that running into a stout tree branch has loosened mine (more than once), and bent the pipe where it came out of the muffler too.
:(

If you can get the slots made and have access to an air chisel you can peel the end of the muffler off of the pipe. If you have air, a cut off wheel can make the slots too. You can use a cold chisel with
a blade angled about 30* from one side to the other, and the edge ground so that only one side of the chisel is ground and the cutting edge is only on one side. This combination of DIY grinding puts the
cutting edge in the slot at a low angle and the side to side angle does the peel back. I hope that makes sense?? Don't hit it hard, just light blows and little movements of the chisel across the metal.
Air is better!

Good luck & a good Thanksgiving to you!

I used a good cold chisel to cut the one of my 3020
John Deere service bulletin said to remove the
manifold from the engine to keep chunks of metal
from the old muffler from getting into the engine I
decided that wasn?t a bad Idea but I figured if I let
the engine idle that would be good enough so that?s
what I did . I had to almost peel all the metal away
from the manifold before the muffler finally came
loose
