JD 50 w/227 picker and 50 sheller

Looked at a 50 tractor with mounted 227 picker yesterday. Tractor ran well and the picker seemed to be in working order. The 50 sheller looked OK but appeared to have sat out for some time. Tractor is weathered but not too rusty or pitted. Tires are shot in the back. Rollamatic w/out power steering. Looks to be a 53 from the tag. Owner is looking for 2100 for the package. What's the approximate worth of a rig like this? Don't really need it but I would hate for it to end up in the scrap yard. Thanks,

Pete

Tractor, sheller, and picker altogether should be worth 2,100 dollars. Not a bargain for the buyer but finding a picker complete with screens and sheller is not especially
easy today. The convenience of one stop shopping has a value. 12.4 X 38 used tires should not be terribly expensive. You could try a counter offer of 1,850-1,900
dollars but don't be surprised if he does not bite on it. Yes, you could probably find better for cheaper on all three but it will probably take some time. Unfortunately, a
lot have already gone to the scrap yard so there are fewer to find. I did not see very many on Craigslist this fall for the 227 or 237 compared to prior years.

The picker and sheller may be hard to find, but they don't really have much demand or value either, maybe $100 each. Without usable rear tires and parts missing from the picker, IHMO the asking price is at least $1,000 too high.

Looks to me, the tractor does not have the Fine Screened "Bonnet" that fit in place of the radiator side screens and extended higher over the hood..

Our 1952 JD "B" tractors both have been left with the rear wheels reversed.. Slid all the way in is perfect for corn cultivators and plowing, ALL the way out, for the Picker..

Ours was a # 226 Picker.. Never really had to have power steering, but "Finesse" makes it easier..

NO, I will not be offering to dig the mud from between the front wheels. (BTDT)..!!!

The Headlights are not mounted high enough and there should (must?) be Dust panels on each side of the tractor hood to keep chaff from getting in and near the exhaust pipe..

Ours didn't have much paint left on it because chaff ignited several times and scorched the paint badly..and it DID have the dust panels in place..

This stuff brings more than you are anticipating. Even an obviously poor 227 will bring 4-500 dollars in a lot of areas. A 50 sheller in fair shape is worth at least 300 dollars. I've seen 50 and 60 tractors missing things such as hood and wheels bring a thousand dollars. 100 dollars for the picker might be the scrap metal price and at that point the guy might just choose to take it to a yard and not deal with the public. I suppose if you are in the right area where a lot of those were sold and some are still known to be around then the seller loses some leverage. In this situation I would say the seller has some leverage.
