A friend and I were trying to figure out when the 404 engine was first offered. Maybe around 1976?

As I understand it all the side hill machines had the 404. Later it became an option on all machines. Maybe someone who knows more has a better answer. Tom

The 105's had a 404 non turbo,, the 6600 side hills had a 404 turbo engine..all the 6600's had the 404 option with the 329 as standard, only the side hills had the turbo option.

I have manuals and brochures that prove that JD did not offer the 404 on level land 6600s late as 1976. I've heard true or not that it was only the last year the 404 was an option on the level land 6600s.

I have not had time to dig thru my brochures yet but I think you have it correct. I went and looked at a 6600 a few years ago owned by a red farmer. He said it had the big engine. It had the 329 and he got very mad when I tried to tell him it did not have a 404. A Deere person can not get the two mixed up and you could read the tag. He said his dealer told him that the person he bought it from had the big engine machine. The dealer never saw it but he knew more than me standing there looking at it.LOL I think it is still setting the same place. Tom

The 404 engine was only used as standard equipment in 1978----the last year of the 6600 production. It was the only engine available in a 6600 in 1978 .
