4020 gas flywheel

I think that I saw a post on this website some time ago, about using a gas flywheel on a diesel if the the flywheel was machined down to fit the starter ring gear. Is this correct. I know that they are different part number.

That can be done as when we changed our 105 combine from gas to diesel we had a shop turn the flywheel to accept the diesel ring gear.A combine uses a different flywheel but if it works on that I see no reason it should not work for you. A 105 uses the same gas and diesel engines as the late 4020. The closest correct flywheel was several hundred dollars and 300 miles away. He may need to cut back a little more than just where the ring gear goes to keep the starter gear from chewing into the shoulder of the flywheel. It took me a few calls before I found a shop with a big enough lathe to fit the flywheel in. He charged me $100 to do it. Good luck. Tom

I put a 4430 engine in my 4020 gas and I had my flywheel machined for the diesel ring gear and it works fine.
