John Deere 40 throttle linkage spring

The spring connecting the throttle/ governor linkage is worn out and therefore the throttle control lever moves loosely before
start up. There should be tension on that lever at all times which is not the case with mine. I haven't been able to find a
matching spring in any hardware or tractor supply store and I was wondering if you guys had to replace this spring and where
you found one that works. Thanks!

On a tractor ride this year one of the guys spring broke when leaving a CaseIH dealers lot for a break. They took it in and matched one up in a few minutes, owner was happy and the tractor was better than before.

"There should be tension on that lever at all times which is not the case with mine."

On WHAT information are you basing that statement??? IMHO, that's NOT correct.

But if it is truly "loose" and/or you need a new governor spring for a "40", the part number is MT1853, available through your local DEERE dealer, Amazon, ebay and all over the 'net. But NOT cheap!

If it's the throttle lever loose like it sounds you're looking in the wrong place. At the handle there are two friction disks, a thrust washer and a spring to keep it in place.

Yes, there should be tension on that spring all the time or it would simply fall off. Sounds like your adjustments for the governor and throttle linkages are all out of whack. A JD 40 repair manual is very specific on how those parts go together and adjust. Put together as the manual instructs and you should have no problem with that spring, unless of course it is REALLY stretched out or possibly the wrong part. Just my 2 cents.

I meant that the lever should not simply flop down as if it was full throttle, it should stay in any position. Sorry if I was unclear about the problem! This only happens when the tractor is not running as well. When it's running I have no problems with the throttle. Thank you for the part number I'll look into it!
