I just got a John Deere B is there any way to find the year the man I got it from said it is 1950 ? It is a 6 speed and has a water pump on it .battery under the seat and it has a coil on it but ser no plate is gone...thanks for any help

50-52 go to jdparts.com and look at the part numbers on some of the castings and then in parts book and you can get close.

If your cast centers in the rear wheels have the extra 4 round holes, it is a '51 or '52. The '50 did not have those 4 extra holes.

If indeed your B does have a factory water pump, be satisfied, you may never see another one as I have been looking at every one I see and only ever seen ONE John Deere B
with a factory water pump. Knowing what others have told you here pretty much narrows things down. Take her to your local tractor show, it will be the only one there with
factory water pump.

I didn't know that they were that scarce. My '50 B has a factory water pump, as does my brother's '52 B.

Don't think the water pump will tell you much as any of them could have been retro fitted. I'm not even sure if the water pump did much with siphron system. I've heard that some of the A's and B's with the M&W power head overheated and I wonder if they added this to offset the problem. Might want to check this aspect as this would make the tractor also rare. I do think also that the 50 early base may be same and you could easily add the water pump as I recall the later 50's were pressurized.

I have no idea just how to tell if most JD "B" Water Pumps are "Factory Original"..

Our 2 1952 JD "B" tractors were going to be used in severe dust conditions ( Mounted Corn Picker, for one) ..

Under any kind of load in clean air, with the radiator fins clean, ours would NEVER exceed 170..but you HAD to watch it in the Corn Picker..the Fine Screen Bonnet would not keep corn silks out..
AND, it did not take long to figure out the Shutters HAD to GO when picking corn..

There was NO WAY you could get the radiator cleaned with the shutters on..

Back in those days, I was usually elected to slide under the picker tractor and dig the MUD out from between the front wheels, BEFORE it Froze Solid..!

Talk about COLD Hands..WOW, I could not feel my fingers for a long time after getting that done..!!

Guess I didn't say...ours had water pumps ordered when the tractors were New..

Without the Shutters, even Plowing in tough ground in the winter, you could not get the Coolant temp above 140....

Made them a little "Cold Natured"...wanted to Flame-out when you least needed it to..!
