John Deere 60 camshaft bearings spring

I am working on a JD 60 and have a few questions about the camshaft bearings and the end play spring. How does this spring provide tension for the camshaft end play? Does the spring rest across the bearing or on the bearing race? Does the spring center on the bearing? How much should the cam move (right to left) once the side cover and spring are installed?

Thanks.

It pushes on the right hand race. Cam will move some if pried against the spring pressure. I do not know how much ? Those bearing are known to go bad and the left side is the worst likely because that is where the load is.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the bearing cup dimensions on JDPARTS.COM. It's shown as 1.938". The diameter of the spring is shown as 1.906". So does this infer that the spring rests on the bearing cup? Does the bearing cup move inside of the crankshaft housing according to pressure provided by the spring? If so, someone put the incorrect size spring in there, as the spring I have is considerable larger than the diameter of the bearing cup.

Hum? I never paid that much attention to them to tell you the truth. The first reduction cover has a spot the spring sits in too IIRC ? I think the cup is in the main case.

Yes, the outer bearing race is free to "float" in the main case. The spring should press against the outer race to provide the proper pre-load.

Thank you-that's what I thought. Someone put the incorrect size spring in the tractor. The spring diameter is far greater than the bearing size.

Was the tractor running when you tore it down? I would think the outer race would work its way out of the case and cause some serious damage.

The tractor has not been run for over 30+ years. Someone had the first reduction cover off prior to me owning the tractor. Thank you to all who answered. I have the correct spring and will install when it gets warmer.
