Going to 8 volt Battery for M

Just purchased a new 6 volt battery and thought it looked too big and sure enough - won't fit in the battery box.
Noticed the 8 volt they had was actually the correct physical size.
Will going to 8 volt require a change to anything else such as the starter, regulator, etc.????

Big problem with 8 volt is charging it. Will need to find an "old timer" with the know how to adjust the regulator. Then what do you do when the regulator fails? Finding reliable replacement regulators seems to be a real ordeal. Plug in chargers with 8 volt range are not common.

If it were mine I would forget the 8 volt and go 12 if a change were made. An internal regulated alternator is more efficient and more reliable than generator/regulator combination.

I would just take it back and get the 6 volt of proper size. IIRC it is a group 1 which is the most common 6 v.

M does not have a regulator it has a cut out which will not be affected. You will notice about 2amps less when gen is charging, but starter will spin faster to start. If battery has to be charged, charge on 12 volt low setting on charger.

Since the M ONLY has a Cutout Relay and no adjustable Voltage Regulator, as is it could possibly charge to a some degree (subject to RPM and Battery and condition of Generator) but not any high current rate. The lights will glow bright but burn out sooner and the points will burn a bit sooner. The Low High charge control should be used on High. This is one of those situations where you just have to try it and see but don't expect super charging, if any at all, as it depends on factors as stated above. If it doesn't work out you can repair the 6 volt system or upgrade to the normal 12 volts versus the band aid 8 volt approach, your tractor your money your call.

Not sure how similar the charging systems are between the M and 40 however I just recently converted my 40 to 12V and I would highly recommend!

Thanks ALL for your replies.
I took it back and found they had the correct size in their stock but not out on the shelf.
Got the right size and all is good.
