I have a hydraulic leak from the canister under the steering hand pump. It has a small line connecting it to the priority valve and the canister has a line going to the brake pedal valve. How do I break it apartment (getting the snap rings out)? What is this part called?

I think that is an accumulator. I would not try to farther disassemble without a service manual.
I'm thinking it may be under very high spring pressure.
Hopefully some one who has done one will come along.

That is the hydraulic accumulator. It has nitrogen under high pressure in it. They are NOT repairable. DO NOT try taking it apart. You can easily be hurt. The only thing You can repair is the orings under the line fittings. IF the canister is leaking it is junk. Replacing it is your only option then.

What that does is give you brakes if the tractor dies. You only get one or two pumps but you will have brakes IF you just hit the pedal and put the tractor into park. The biggest trouble with them is guys never check them. So they lose charge and do not work. So you kill the tractor on a hill and have no steering or brakes. Also fellows panic and start to PUMP the brake peddle. They lose brakes even with working accumulator.

In theory, if you are pumping the brakes AND the brake valve is in good shape, you should be in "manual brakes" mode??

AS incorrectly stated, these are completely repairable. I have done many, many of these. Most likely it is dead but if not, the nitrogen can be bled of at fill plug. Has piston with seals inside it that are available through John Deere service parts. If you can rebuild a hydraulic cylinder these are much simpler. WTW

I agree with WTW, I have rebuilt them also,, I have a nitrogen fill station here,, the ones with a bladder are not repairable,,the one used on the console models are they have a piston in the middle to separate the nitro form the oil
