JD H rear wheel bearing lube

Thinking that after some 75 years it would be a good idea to put some fresh grease on the outboard rear wheel bearing. Owner's manual does NOT mention service of them. No grease fittings are on the axle. Soooo, anyone get experience in doing this? Looks like jack tractor, take retainer loose and then can the bearing be gotten to? I have a needle attachment to the grease gun so I could get some grease in that way. Your thoughts....
Thanks

It's been a while since I put brakes on my H but if I remember you have to pull the axle housing off the main case to get at the bearings

I think you can do that but should stabilize the axle
so it doesn't move around.

As D- mentioned, you should be able to do that. This parts illustration shows the outer tapered roller bearing (#8 cup and (#9 cone with rollers) and you'll have to remove the outer dust shield (#3) and the housing with the inner felt washer seal (#4, 6 & 7). Those shims (#5) are for setting the adjustment of the taper roller bearings, but if they are replaced (or left in place) the bearing adjustment should be the same as it was before you started. After that is done, the end of the bearing will be exposed. The inner tapered roller bearing is exposed to the transmission oil so it gets lubricated from that oil.

Not terribly surprising in light of Deere's wanting to make this a CHEAP tractor. The very first of a number of features/goals outlined in Decision 7900 authorizing the production of the "H" was this:

"I. Low Production Cost, obtained by:
A. Low Material Cost resulting from extensive use of high strength materials and simplification of design......"

So Deere's top priority was to keep costs down. Those extra zerk fittings and associated machining would have cost an extra few cents that they decided they didn't want to justify, apparently defined as "simplification of design".

Well it has proven to of worked out well ! lol. I parted out and worked on a lot of H's and wheel bearings never seemed to be an issue. I had a few that someone left that spacer # 10 out of them. Been so long since I had one apart I can't remember if you can get grease to them from the outside or not ?
