4239 verses 4045

What is the real difference in these engines ? Looks like a 4239 is less CI.and older design. But other than that will they bolt in the same and will the bell housings interchange off the blocks ? Both are non-turbo.

(quoted from post at 09:47:42 10/17/18) So what really changed for a power tech ? anything more than just the name ?

More power and lower emissions . A turbo intercooled 279 four makes lots of power in a small package . They show up in some industrial equipment .
115-125HP no problem at 2400rpm

The quick answer is yes. That said there are differences the 4045 (was called 4276) is taller than a 4239. This will affect water pump and fan height. Also the oil cooler and filter are different and may cause a problem. The tach drive on the back of the cam may have to be changed. There may be other differences but that was what I run into installing a 4239 where a 4276 had been in a 2640 tractor.

I thought the 4045 looked a lot larger/taller block. Right now they are about 20 miles apart from each other and I got first look at 4239 last night.

You are somewhat correct, The 4276 / 4.5 pre PowerTech series engines share the same bore as the 4239 but have a larger stroke of 5 inches versed 4.3 stroke. Yes the deck height is about 3/4" taller on the long stroke engine. The common water pumps are only different due to engine oil cooler ports as the long stroke has one oil cooler water port where short stroke has two. Water pump height on common application / coded engines are the same at the extra block height is above the water pump mounting on engine block. DW

This family of engines are the most interchangeable of all JD engines. All three, four and six cylinder 300 series engines share common front and rear bolt patterns meaning front and rear covers and casting can be swapped. The only thing I have learned swapping these in farm tractor is tractors with cast iron oil pans like 2510 and 20's the long stroke engine #4 connecting rod will hit pan if it is not clearanced when installing. I got two of these engine available. One 4239 and one 4276. The 4276 was a running engine just recently removed from a machine that is as clean as a new one and runs like a new one. Right now has a side mounted turbo charger. Previous owner said it was the best starting engine in fleet and engine has never had a block heater in it! That saying allot coming from Eastern Iowa! Will start on first revolution. Only thing you might not like is its painted red. If interested let me know I would sell either or both of them. DW
