hydrofluid mystery

Thought I posted this problem earlier but it appeared not to take. This will be the short version. I think I overfilled the hydro in my 2630.
Thought I was a bit low and ended up putting 8 gallons in and it still didn't come up to the threads under the cap..Before the add and after,
runs equipment fine. But, fluid started coming out the bases of the shift levers when I ran it. My instinct tells me I added too much, but
where's it going, why is it coming out of lever bases, have I done any harm, and what do I do about it? Thanks.

Correct method to check oil level on a JD utility tractor built from '66-'82 such as your 2630 is with engine running at idle hyd oil dipstick resting on threaded tube & oil level at full mark on the dipstick. IIRC there should be no oil in clutch housing cavity under gearshift levers.

When you say threads under the cap, are you referring to the big cap behind the seat where you added oil? Check as described by TX Jim. It looks like the 2630 system only holds about 10 gallons total, so it doesn't seem as though everything would be working right if the oil was that low.

I believe there is oil under the shift levers as I think the transmission pump is in that cavity. The clutch/flywheel is in the housing ahead of it.

OK first, if it was working ok why add additional fluid? Second, if you filled up to the threads of the fill cap behind the seat then you are way over full. Third, the gear shift levers are not in the clutch housing - they are positioned directly above the transmission so there would be excess fluid at that point due to over-filling. Lastly, the dip stick on these late 60's early 70's models is in the running board on the left (brake side) of the transmission housing.

The other left -- lol. The dipstick is in the transmission case at the left rear corner of the right running board. I have those days too.

JD calls the housing in photo the "clutch housing". Gearshift lever housing bolts to open area in "clutch housing" that blue arrow points at. Shift rails then lead back to the top of trans shafts

Agreed, JD calls that the clutch housing. It is a "split" housing the front section covers the flywheel and clutch and is dry. The rear section, under the shift levers, is wet. It it contains the transmission pump and the independent PTO if so equipped. That section and the transmission case have opening between them for the common oil in them. At least that is the arrangement on my 2030s.
