620 shifting

I have a 57 620 that is very difficult to shift into first gear and reverse. Have to use two hands to move. all other gears are fine. Any suggestions? Thanks

Years ago a neighbor had a 60 like that,,the top shaft was bent just a bit,,if you moved the tractor a few feet it would shift fine,,a few more feet and it was sticky,,in fact he blocked the reverse opening with a bolt and nut so he wouldn't let it go clear into reverse,, a few times before that he had to hook to it and pull it forward till it freed up...he never did fix it right..I remember that he broke the shifter a couple times trying to get it out of gear..so be careful of that...

sounds like the locker is binding on the shaft...maybe something bent or broke on the locker...if the clutch is free wheeling it should move kinda with a little slap...

A recommendation would be to get into the transmission and see what is going on...otherwise you might trash out everything...now this is if you want to save tractor...otherwise you might move on...most of these old tractors have worn bearing and loose countershafts along with wear....I can tell you from experience it is very expensive to work on these transmissions...

somehow I see a lot of people on these tractors that think problems are simple after using these over 60 years. I think even John Deere recommended servicing these cone bearing every few decades.
