49 A hydraulic oil flows right into transmission case

Seeking some advice on how to get my A ready to go to the field. I bought it about a month ago and gave it a much needed tune up. However when I filled the powrtrol I noticed that I couldn't get the oil level up where it should be. Then I backed off the transmission plug and sure enough I had excess oil spilling out. I wouldn't think a blown rockshaft cylinder gasket would allow the oil to flow back to the transmission that quick without the tractor running so I am figuring it's a packing around the PTO. Am I on the right track? I have never had the back end of one of these apart, can anyone explain what I can look forward to? I have the service manual for a late B, will much of the information also pertai to a late a in so far as the rockshaft housing and PTO are concerned? Thanks,

Pete

(quoted from post at 18:53:36 10/15/18) Pete - the service manual for the powertrol system is SM-2011.
eah I have been reading up on the powrtrol hydraulic pumps in my 60 service manual which contains sm 2011. It seems like I could repack the PTO seals in the pump without removing the rockshaft housing, which is what I would like to do for starters. Does that sound right?

Pete,

There are 2 places where hyd. oil can leak into the rear end / transmission. One is the gasket between the
cylinder and the rockshaft housing. The other place is the seals on the pto shaft where it passes through
the front side of the rockshaft housing. These seals look like large garden hose washers. The rockshaft
housing has to be removed to get at these 2 places.

Hyd. oil that leaks by the packing on the piston goes back to the hyd. oil reservoir, not the rear end /
transmission.

The info in the late B service manual applies to your late A.

From you post it sound like you have a large leak? How long does to take for the hydraulic oil to drain
into the transmission?? I've seen 2 model A's with major issues, one being the rock shaft housing cracked
water in side & froze & another with a Hole rubbed though from the bull gear & bad bearings. Most of the time
it is a PTO seal & blown gasket on the cylinder housing that sometimes gets warped & won't seal with a new gasket.

t ran through almost immediately. I put 2 gallons of hygard in the powrtrol but it wasn't coming out of the side cock (I even removed the cock to be sure). Then I checked the transmission and it had picked up the extra oil.

Also one other place. I had the end of the rockshaft cylinder completely break off and that would dump the oil into the rear end. 2 man job to repair using a lift as the entire hydrolic unit has to come off.
